Minnesota Sweeps Bemidji State With 4-0 Shutout

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Minnesota completed a two-game sweep of the Bemidji State women’s hockey team with a 4-0 triumph this afternoon at the John Glas Fieldhouse. With the win, the Golden Gophers solidified a 4-0 mark against the Beavers this season.

Minnesota scored the lone goal of the first period, as Kelly Stephens tallied her 11th goal of the season at 10:47 to put UM up 1-0 heading into the first intermission. The Golden Gophers outshot the Beavers 8-1 in the opening session.

UM lit the lamp twice in the second stanza to stage a commanding three-goal advantage. Krissy Wendell continued her offensive dominance with her 19th marker of the season at 15:43. Becky Wacker netted her 10th goal of the year at the 17:54 mark, pushing the Golden Gophers lead to 3-0. Minnesota recorded a 11-6 shot advantage in the second period.

In the final period of regulation, UM added one more score at the 16:53 mark when Stacy Troumbly recorded her first career goal. The Golden Gophers compiled eight shots in the period, compared to BSU’s three.

The shot totals reveal a strong defensive showing by the visitors, as Minnesota finished with 27 shots, while Bemidji State managed 10 shots.

Senior goaltender Anik Côté stopped 23 shots between the pipes for the Beavers. The captain now has a record of 2-10-0 this season.

Bemidji State drops to 5-20-1 overall and 3-15-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association competition. Minnesota improves to 19-2-1 and 13-2-1 in WCHA play. BSU will be back in action next weekend, as the Beavers will take part in a home-and-home series with North Dakota on Friday, Feb. 6 and Sunday, Feb. 8. Friday’s game will be played at the John Glas Fieldhouse, while Sunday’s contest will be at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 2:05 p.m. Sunday.
