BEMIDJI, MINN. - Freshman forward Kelly Hart tallied two points, including the game-winning goal with 18 seconds left in regulation to give the Bemidji State women’s hockey team a 3-2 victory this afternoon over Wayne State. The game marked the season opener for both teams.

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead at the 15:50 mark of the first period as sophomore Melissa Schaeffer took a pass from junior Andrea Carlson and beat goalkeeper Anna VanderMarliere to put BSU up 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until 1:33 of the second period when freshman Helena Tageson tallied her first collegiate goal on the power play off an assist from fellow newcomer Kelly Hart to open up a 2-0 BSU lead.

The third period saw Wayne State make a furious comeback with goals by Jessica Haydahl at the 6:52 mark and Emily McGrath-Agg on the power play at 11:25.

The Beavers would answer, however, as Kelly Hart put the game away at 19:42 of the third period with her first goal at BSU. Helena Tageson and Nikki Eckebrecht picked up assists on the goal.

Head coach Bruce Olson was happy with how his team responded after Wayne State tied the game at 2-2.

“Even though we gave up two goals, as third period went on we got stronger and stronger and I think all the hard work paid off when we got the game-winner,” Olson said.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jill Luebke earned her third career win after making 22 saves in the game.

BSU and Wayne State will face off again tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. at the John Glas Fieldhouse.
