BEMIDJI, MINN. - One night after being shut out 8-0, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team rebounded with a much stronger performance in a 3-1 loss to Mercyhurst Saturday night.

After being outshot 29-9 in Friday’s contest, the Beavers turned the tables on the Lakers with a 31-21 shot advantage in the series finale.

Mercyhurst got on the scoreboard first with an even strength goal at the 3:47 mark of the first period from Teresa Marchese-Del Monte, her second goal of the weekend.

The Lakers added two more markers in the second period as Britney Millar scored a power play goal at 4:25 and Lyndsay Barch tallied her second point of the series at 8:01 of the second frame.

The Beavers elevated their level of play in third period and their effort was rewarded at the 15:00 minute mark when sophomore Carly Napier lit up the scoreboard on the power play, marking her second goal of the season. Sarah Zuelke and Kelly Hart each were credited with helpers on the goal.

BSU would have one more chance to cut the Mercyhurst lead with a 5-on-3 advantage with less than a minute remaining in regulation, but it was unable to generate the equilizer and the Lakers pulled out a 3-
1 victory.

Despite the loss, head coach Bruce Olson was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We played one-hundred percent better tonight,” Olson said, “We came ready to play and I saw some of the best passing I have seen since I have been at Bemidji State.”

The Beavers are now 1-6-1 on the season and 0-4-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. BSU will host WCHA opponent Wisconsin on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8 at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and 2:05 p.m. on Saturday.
