COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Bemidji State women’s hockey team dropped its ninth consecutive game in a 2-1 loss to Ohio State (4-5-0, 4-5-0 WCHA), Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The Beavers are winless in their last four meetings with the Buckeyes.

After the two teams battled through a scoreless first period in which Ohio State compiled a 12-6 shot advantage, the Buckeyes opened the scoring with a breakaway goal from sophomore Jana Harrigan at the 5:49 mark of the second stanza to earn a 1-0 lead.

Ohio State lengthened its lead to 2-0 at 5:51 of the third period when junior Jennifer Desson picked up her seventh goal of the season.

Desson’s goal proved to be an instrumental one, as BSU freshman Nikki Eckebrecht netted her second goal of the season on the power play at 11:41 of the period to cut the Buckeyes lead to 2-1. Freshman Kelly Hart extended her team leading point total to five with an assist on the goal. Sophomore Sarah Zuelke was also credited with a helper, her second of the 2003-04 campaign.

The Beavers pulled goaltender Anik Côté with just 49 seconds remaining in regulation, but were unable to tie the game.

Despite peppering goalkeeper Melissa Glaser with 13 shots in the third period, Ohio State outshot the Beavers 28-20 in the contest.

Senior captain Anik Côté made 26 saves in goal for BSU and Melissa Glaser stopped 11 shots between the pipes for Ohio State.

BSU now owns a 1-9-1 overall record and an 0-7-0 mark in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Beavers will look to leave Columbus with a split in the rubber match between the two teams Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink. The puck will drop at 4:05 p.m. eastern time.
