Ohio State Icers Finish Sweep of Bemidji State With 4-0 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind the 33-save performance of freshman goaltender Erika Vanderveer, the Ohio State women’s hockey team (5-5-0, 5-5-0 WCHA) completed a two-game sweep of Bemidji State with a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes now own a 11-6-3 all-time record against the Beavers.

After a scoreless opening period, that saw BSU outshoot Ohio State 13-4, the Buckeyes lit up the scoreboard at the 1:47 mark of the second period with a power play goal from Jeanne Chapple to go ahead 1-0. Erin O’Grady tallied another marker at the 12:45 of the period allowing Ohio State to open up a 2-0 lead after two periods of play.

The Buckeyes added two more goals in the third period to solidfy a convincing 4-0 victory.

Despite the loss, head coach Bruce Olson was pleased with his team’s effort.

“For two periods we played well enough to win, but in the third period we seemed to run out of gas,” Olson said. “We are getting the effort we need out of the players and eventualy we will catch a few breaks and start putting the puck in the net.”

For the game, the Beavers outshot Ohio State 33-26, including a 24-12 advantage in the first two periods of action.

Senior captain Anik Côté made 22 saves in goal for BSU, while Vanderveer stopped 33 shots between the pipes for Ohio State.

Bemidji State is now 1-10-1 overall and 0-8-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Beavers will stay in Ohio for a non-conference series with College Hockey America member, Findlay on Tuesday, Nov. 25 and Wednseday, Nov. 26 at Clauss Ice Arena. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and 3:00 p.m. Wednesday.
