BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State’s third line of Jenn Sadler, Kate Robinson and Nicky Kluck combined to score nine points, including Sadler’s first collegiate hat trick to give the Beavers a 5-3 win over St. Cloud State Friday night at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The victory marks BSU’s first Western Collegiate Hockey Association triumph of the season. The Beavers five-goal performance also marks a season-high and with the win BSU is now 10-9-3 overall against the Huskies and 4-1-1 in their last six meetings with St. Cloud State.

After both teams struggled to generate any offense early in the first period, Kelly Stewart took advantage of an errant Bemidji State pass to beat goalkeeper Jill Luebke off a breakaway at 18:06 of the opening period, giving the Huskies a 1-0 advantage entering the first intermission.

The Beavers evened the contest at 1-1 at the 15:20 mark of the second stanza as Jenn Sadler lit up the scoreboard off helpers from Laura Lankton and Nicky Kluck. Sadler’s goal was her first of the 2003-04 campaign.

The Huskies reponded with a goal of their own just 27 seconds later when sniper Roxanne Stang took a feed from Carrie Holldorf and slipped the puck into the net to give SCSU a 2-1 advantage.

Sadler netted her second lamplighter of the night less than two minutes later with assists coming from Kluck and Kate Robinson to tie the game at 2-2.

BSU took control of the play in the first five minutes of the final period, as Kate Robinson tallied the gamewinner, her second marker of the season at 2:26. Sadler and Ashley Medori each were credited with assists on the goal. At 4:19 Sadler notched the hat trick with her third goal and fourth point of the evening. Mandy Bambrough earned her first helper of the season on the score, while Robinson netted her third point of the contest with an additional assist. The last BSU player to score a hat trick was its all-time scoring leader Amber Fryklund who achieved the feat in a 4-3 win over Findlay on Feb. 14, 2003.

St. Cloud State attempted a late rally with a power-play marker from Leanne Perrin at 14:16 of the third period, but it was not enough to upend the Beavers as frosh Nikki Eckebrecht finished off the Huskies with an empty netter with only six seconds remaining in the game. Kelly Hart added her five fifth assist of the season and team-leading eighth point of the season on the goal.

Netminder Jill Luebke earned her third win of the season after stopping 18 shots for BSU.

The Beavers are now 3-13-1 overall and 1-10-0 in WCHA play. BSU will look to earn its first sweep of the season with a win in the series finale Saturday afternoon at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The puck drops at 2:05 p.m..
