BEMIDJI, Minn. - Behind frosh Kelly Hart’s two goals, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team earned its first sweep of the season Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over St. Cloud State at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The win pushes the Beavers into sixth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a 2-10-0 conference record and 4-13-1 overall mark, while the Huskies drop to 0-9-1 in WCHA competition and 3-12-1 overall.

Unlike Friday night, in which only one goal was scored in the opening period of play, the two teams combined to tally three scores in Saturday’s contest. Senior Guylaine Haché put BSU on the board with her second goal of the year at 3:49 of the first period off assists from Cassi Petsch and Carly Napier. The early lead would not last long, however, as St. Cloud State’s Carrie Holldorf knotted the game at 1-1 with her seventh marker of the season at 16:12 of the period. The Beavers regained the lead at the 17:24 mark as Kelly Hart beat Husky goalkeeper Ellen Brinkman with an awkward angle shot on the left side of the net, to notch her fourth goal of the season.

After BSU killed off a bench minor for delay of game early in the second stanza, Kate Robinson scored what proved to the game-winning goal for the Beavers at the 3:11 mark.

St. Cloud State cut BSU’s advantage to 3-2 at 15:15 of the second period when Holldorf lit the lamp for the second time on the afternoon, her eighth of the season.

The Beavers lengthened their lead in the third period with two scores in the first two minutes of play. Helena Tageson took a cross-ice pass from Jenny Schnickel and slid the puck in the net at 1:08, while Kelly Hart tallied her team-leading fifth goal on the season just 42 seconds later. After Brie Anderson replaced Husky netminder Ellen Brinkman with 18:10 remaining in regulation, SCSU was unable to cut into BSU’s lead, securing a 5-2 triumph for the Beavers.

Head coach Bruce Olson was happy with the overall performance of his team.

“I was pleased to see the intensity carry over from last night’s game,” Olson said. “It was nice to see the players respond this weekend and score a bunch of goals and to get different players scoring is definitely a positive as well.”

Anik Côté earned her first win of the year between the pipes after making 15 saves for BSU.

Bemidji State will not be in action again until Friday, Jan. 9 and Saturday, Jan. 10 in a rematch with St. Cloud State at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 2:05 Saturday.
