North Dakota's Special Teams Key 5-1 Victory Over Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The University of North Dakota tallied three power-play goals and one shorthanded marker en route to a 5-1 victory over the Bemidji State women’s hockey team tonight at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The three power-play scores by UND were the most allowed by the Beavers this season.

The Fighting Sioux jumped on the Beavers three times in the opening period, scoring three consecutive goals, each of which came on the power-play. Marissa Hangsleben lit the lamp for the first time of the season at 3:48 to put North Dakota up 1-0. UND captain, Sherrie White, netted her seventh and eighth markers of the season at 13:00 and 15:23 to build a 3-0 advantage for the visitors.

Frosh Kate Robinson broke up the Fighting Sioux’s attempt at a shutout with her sixth tally of the 2003-04 campaign at the 15:50 mark of the first stanza. Junior Nicky Kluck was credited with her sixth assist of the year on the goal.

Despite being outshot by a clip of 22-15 in the final two periods of play, North Dakota added two scores in the second session to build a 5-1 lead. Stasia Bakhit notched two lamplighters for the Fighting Sioux, her 18th and 19th of the season. Her first score was an even-strength marker, while the second was a shorthanded goal.

For the game, Bemidji State outshot North Dakota 30-26.

UND converted on three of its four power play opportunities, while BSU went zero-for-six on the night.

Sophomore netminder Jill Luebke made 21 saves between the pipes for the Beavers. Her season record now drops to 3-11-1.

Bemidji State falls to 5-21-1 overall and 2-7-1 in non-conference play. North Dakota improves to 12-14-2 on the season. BSU will look to earn a split with UND on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. The puck will drop at 2:05 p.m.
