MANKATO, Minn. - After jumping out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period over Minnesota State, Mankato, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team held on for a 2-2 overtime tie at All Seasons Arena Friday night. The tie snapped a two-game losing streak to the Mavericks and pushed the Beavers into a sixth-place tie with St. Cloud State in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

BSU started the game’s scoring at 5:32 of the first period as sophomore Carly Napier tallied her fifth marker of the season off helpers from Cassi Petsch and Melissa Schaeffer. The Beavers extended their lead to two goals at 6:07 of the second stanza when frosh Nikki Eckebrecht took a long pass from Kelly Hart and scored a short-handed goal, her fifth lamplighter of the year. The assist by Hart was her team-leading 10th helper of the year.

The Mavericks began a comeback exactly one minute later, however, as Autumn Conway scored her seventh goal of the season following a roughing penalty on Bemidji State. Sammy Miller then netted the game-tying goal with 31 seconds left in the second frame to knot the score at two apiece. Neither team was able to generate any further offense in the contest as the two teams skated to scoreless third and overtime periods.

BSU allowed the power-play goal but were successful in killing off a five-minute major penalty in the second period. Minnesota State enjoyed a 29-20 shot advantage over the Beavers.

Senior goalkeeper Anik Côté was sharp between the pipes, making 27 saves in 65 minutes of work.

With the tie, Bemidji State ends a seven game losing streak and improves to 5-24-2 overall and 3-17-1 in WCHA competition. MSU moves to 14-10-4 on the season and 7-8-4 in the WCHA.
