MANKATO, Minn. - After ending the first period in a 1-1 tie, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team surrendered three unanswered goals to give Minnesota State a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks are now 9-8-5 all-time against the Beavers.

Unlike Friday’s contest, in which BSU scored the game’s first two goals, MSU got on the board first at the 1:27 mark of the opening period when Devon Nichols tallied her ninth marker of the season. After holding Minnesota State scoreless the rest of the period, the Beavers tied the game at 1-1 at 5:36 of the second stanza. Sophomore Cassi Petsch netted her second goal of the year and second point of the weekend.

The Mavericks took control from there, however, as the home team notched three consecutive goals to record a 4-1 win. At 15:16 of the second frame, Lyndsay James provided the game-winner for MSU with a power-play goal, her second tally of the season.

Minnesota State’s power-play unit lit the lamp again at 16:32 of the third period off a goal from Kate Hainrich. Hainrich tacked on an empty-net score with 2:18 remaining in regulation to seal the Beavers fate.

BSU finished the game zero-for-seven on the power-play and were shut out on 15 power-play opportunities in the two-game series.

Netminder Anik Côté stopped 24 shots in the loss and her season record is now 2-12-1.

Bemidji State falls to 5-25-2 overall and 3-18-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association competition. MSU improves to 15-10-4 on the season and 8-8-4 in the WCHA. The Beavers will take a break next weekend before closing out the season with a two-game set at Wisconsin on Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7. The puck will drop at 2:05 p.m. both days.
