St. Cloud beats Bemidji State 4-1 in series finale

St. Cloud, Minn. - Bemidji State (1-4-1, 0-4-0) was looking for its first Western Collegiate Hockey Conference victory of the season as they played the final game of a two game series against St. Cloud State (2-4-0, 2-4-0) at the National Hockey Center on Saturday afternoon.

Bemidji State came up short losing to the Huskies 4-1 in the final game of the series.

Despite being out shot in the first period 12-4, Bemidji State and St. Cloud State ended the first period in a 0-0 tie. Senior goaltender Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis) was able to stay strong between the pipes for the
beavers to keep them tied with the Huskies through one period of play.

In the second period the Huskies scored three unanswered goals to give the a 3-0 lead. Hailey Clarkson got the Huskies on the board at the 7:48 mark of the second period as she netted her second goal of the season to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead. It wouldn’t take the Huskies long to put another one on the board as just one-minute and five seconds later Kristy Oonincx scored a power play goal recording her first goal of the season for the Huskies. Laura Fast would cap off the scoring for the Huskies in the second period as she scored at the 13:35 mark to give the Huskies the 3-0 lead.

Bemidji State would record their first goal on the power-play, freshman Brooke Collins (Pilot Mound, Manitoba) recorded her first goal as a Beaver at the 13:35 mark of the second period. Assisting on the goal was junior Nikki Eckebrecht (Hamilton, Ontario) and junior Helena Tageson (Malmo, Sweden).
Bemidji State was only able to put one shot on net during the second period as they were out-shot 15-1 and trailed 3-1 at the end of two periods of play.

In the third period BSU picked up the offensive opportunities as they out-shot the Huskies 8-2. The Beavers were unable to capitalize on their power-play opportunities as they went 0-3 in the period and 1-10 in power-play opportunities on the day.

The Huskies would add an empty net goal at 18:39 in the third period. Kristy Oonincx recorded her second goal and third point of the day (2g, 1a). Hailey Clarkson had four points for the Huskies (1g, 3a) and Ashley Stewart recorded three points (og, 3a) for the Huskies.

Goaltender Jill Luebke gave up three goals while making 25 saves on the day. Luebke’s recorded falls to 1-2-0 on the season.

Bemidji State is know 12-15-4 all-time versus the Huskies and they hold a 6-9-1 record at the National Hockey Center located in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Beavers have next weekend off and won’t be in action again until November 4-5 when they will host the Minnesota State, Mankato Mavericks at the John Glas Fieldhouse. Friday, November 4th the game is slated to start at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday, November 5th the puck is scheduled to drop at 2:07 p.m.
