Beavers have three players named as WCHA Scholar-Athletes

MADISON , Wis. - Bemidji State’s Laura Lankton (Sr., D, Houghton, Mich.), Millisa Smith (So., G, Elk River, Minn.), and Tara Hiscock (So., F, Bemidji, Minn.) were named as Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Scholar-Athletes on Tuesday (Feb. 22). The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced an inaugural group of 47 WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award recipients. This is new honor developed through Association member team Faculty Representatives and approved by the conference membership for this 2005-06 season.

To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-memeber student-athletes must have completed as least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his or her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.

The WCHA honored 23 women’s hockey players as WCHA Scholar-Athletes. Minnesota State University led the WCHA women having six players announced as WCHA Scholar-Athletes, while Bemidji State had three players recognized for this award.

Bemidji State will host the St. Cloud State Huskies this weekend for its final home series of the 2005-06 season. These three Scholar-Athletes will be recognized and honored prior to Friday night’s game and will be presented with a plaque at that time for their accomplishments. Also, prior to Saturday’s game Bemidji State will recognize its six seniors as they will play their last home game.

Friday’s game is scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. while the puck will drop at 2:07 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
