Erika Wheelhouse named WCHA Rookie of the Week
MADISON, Wis. — Freshman defender Erika Wheelhouse (Crookston, Minn.) was recognized by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for her efforts in the Jan. 8-9 weekend against Minnesota State being named Rookie of the Week for the week of Jan. 13.
Wheelhouse contributed two assists, blocked nine shots and helped Bemidji State blank the Mavericks on all nine of their power-play chances in the two-game series. Last Friday (Jan. 8), she set up both of her team’s goals in the second period to stake BSU to a 2-0 lead en route to a 2-2 tie against MSU. She also had two shots on goal and helped hold the Mavericks scoreless on all five power-play attempts.
Then on Saturday (Jan. 9), Wheelhouse was a key contributor defensively as Bemidji State forged a 3-0 victory over MSU despite being outshot, 37-29.
On the season, Wheelhouse is tied for first in scoring among BSU freshmen with nine points (9A) and she has played in all 22 of her team’s games.
