Erickson and Read garner Beaver Pride’s weekly honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Emily Erickson (R-Fr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) and Matt Read (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of March 1-7.

Erickson had a hand in all three goals scored by the Beavers in their first-ever WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF game, March 6 against Minnesota Duluth. Erickson netted two goals while assisting of the other in the 7-3 loss to the No. 2 Bulldogs in the semifinal contest. Scoring Bemidji State’s first goal of the game, Erickson tucked the biscuit underneath the glove of UMD’s goalie Jennifer Harss. The Beavers entered the third period down 6-1, but Erickson’s effort quickly cut the Bulldog lead to half. Four minutes into the period, Erin Cody added a second Beaver goal with help from Erickson. Less than two minutes later, Erickson scored her second goal of the game as the Beavers looked to mount a comeback. However, an empty-net goal later in the period by the Bulldogs would halt the BSU rally.

Erickson ended the 2009-10 campaign fifth on the team in scoring with 15 points (6G, 9A). BSU capped the season with a record of 12-19-7 (9-12-7-3 WCHA), the most wins since the 2001-02 squad posted a 12-13-8 mark. Its nine conference wins ties the 2006-07 squad for the most league victories in program history.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first time during the 2009-10 campaign that the organization has honored Erickson, while it stands as the seventh award for a member of the BSU women’s hockey team.

Read led all BSU scorers with a goal and two assists, helping the Beavers to a three-point series versus Alabama-Huntsville to cap the 2009-10 regular season. Read helped on a power-play goal in Friday’s 3-2 victory before factoring in on the scoring of both BSU’s goals in a 2-2 overtime draw Saturday. The junior potted his team-leading 19th goal of the season and added an assist on the game-tying, power-play goal midway through the third period. With at least a point in each game, Read extended his point streak to a season-long six games.

The Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the second for Read during the 2009-10 campaign and the fourth of his career, while it stands as the 10th award for a member of the BSU men’s hockey team.

The men’s hockey team (23-8-3, 14-3-1 CHA) opens the “second season” this weekend as it attempt to defend its title in the 2010 CHA Tournament Championship at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y.  The top-seeded Beavers will play No. 4 Niagara University at 6 p.m. (CST), while Robert Morris University, the second seed, will battle No. 3 Ala.-Huntsville in the other semifinal at 2 p.m. (CST) Friday.  Semifinal winners will advance to the CHA Championship at 7 p.m. Saturday.
