Beavers fall short to No. 5 Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. – After allowing seven goals in Friday’s contest, the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team had a strong defensive showing on Sunday afternoon, but the No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers were still too strong for the Beavers as Bemidji State dropped the game 2-0 in the Kohl Center.

BSU netminder Zuzana Tomcikova (Jr., Bratislava, Slovakia) had a huge game in net for the Beavers stopping 41 of 43 shots in the game, including making 16 saves in the third period. The Beavers only had 11 shots on goal for the game.

Bemidji State played well disciplined hockey as the Beavers were only assessed for one penalty in the game. The Beavers successfully killed off the penalty, which occurred in the second period.

The Badgers opened the scoring at the end of the first period when Carolyne Prevost scored her fourth goal of the weekend at the 18:48 mark. In the second period, the Beaver defense held the Badgers scoreless even though being out-shot 13-3. The third period saw the Badgers play even tougher as they got 17 shots on goal and scored one goal.

Bemidji State was led in shots by Annie Bauerfeld (Sr., For., Woodbury, Minn.), who had the lone Beaver goal on Friday,  Erin Cody (Sr., For., Roseville, Minn.) and MacKenzie Thurston (So., For., Ottawa, Ontario). All three forwards had two shots on goal a piece.

The BSU defensive unit made a total of 16 blocks in the game, making the total blocked shots on the weekend 38.

Bemidji State will return to the ice this coming Friday and Saturday as the Beavers host nationally-ranked Mercyhurst in what will be the first game to be played in the Bemidji Regional Events Center. The game times are slated for 2:07 p.m. both days.
