Lauren Williams goal lifts Bemidji State over St. Cloud State 3-2
ST CLOUD, Minn. - Lauren Williams’ (Sr., F, Eagan, Minn.) goal from the left circle in the middle of the second period lifted the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over St. Cloud State University Friday afternoon at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The win is the 16th of the season for the Beavers giving the 2011-12 squad the most wins of any BSU women’s hockey team in program history.

The victory also snaps a winless streak for BSU in the first game of a series in WCHA competition dating back to Oct. 21 when they defeated St. Cloud State at Sanford Center. The Beavers improve to 4-12-2 (2-11-1 WCHA) in the first game of a series. BSU is now 16-15-3 (10-14-2 WCHA) heading into the final game of the regular season Saturday. St. Cloud State falls to 5-26-2 (4-23-0 WCHA).

Friday’s game was defined by a period of just over two minutes in the second period in which the teams tallied three goals, two for BSU and one for St. Cloud State, including L. Williams’ game winner.

St. Cloud State got off to a quick start Friday afternoon as Jocelyn Zabrick played the puck top cheddar over the left shoulder of Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) for a goal 3:39 into the contest. The goal ended a 100 minute shutout streak for Tomcikova stretching over the last three games. The goal was Zabrick’s fourth of the season. Assists came from Callie Dahl, her first of the year, and Ellie Sitek, her first of the season.

Bemidji State answered at the 7:03 mark as Sadie Lundquist (Jr., F, Cloquet, Minn.) stole the puck on a SCSU power-play in the neutral zone and skated in one-on-one where she beat SCSU goaltender Julie Friend for her 11th goal of the season and BSU’s third short-handed goal of the season. The goal was unassisted. Emily Erickson (R-Jr., Coleraine, Minn.) helped make the play happen as she got in front of an SCSU player forcing the turnover. The netter ends Lundquist’s streak of six games without a goal dating back to Jan. 21 against No. 2 University of Minnesota.

The Beavers took the lead 2-1 at the 7:27 mark of the second period as Kimberly Lieder (Sr., D, Eagan, Minn.) used a rocket from the point which went into the right corner of the goal over the shoulder of Friend. Lieder’s goal snapped an 0-for-26 scoreless streak on the power play dating back to Jan. 27 at University of Wisconsin. The goal was Lieder’s fifth of the season and BSU’s 31st on the power play. Kristin Huber (Fr., F, Kelowna, British Columbia) notched her seventh helper of the year while Mackenzie Thurston (Jr., F, Ottawa, Ontario) picked up her 14th assist on the netter.

BSU added to its lead when Williams used a laser from the left circle to give BSU a 3-1 advantage. The puck went right past Friend in net. The goal was L. Williams’ fifth of the season. Huber picked up her eighth assist of the season and her second of the game on the goal. Lieder also picked up an assist, her sixth of the year, marking her first multi-point game in her four-year career for the Beavers.

St. Cloud State responded just 17 seconds later as Molli Mott batted down a puck mid-air near the net and chipped at the puck multiple times before putting it past Tomcikova for her ninth goal of the year. Kylie Lane tallied her second assist of the year on the goal while Sydney Burghardt had her fourth helper of the year on the score.

Tomcikova picked up the win in goal for the Beavers with 26 saves on the game. She moved past Molly Schaus of Boston College and the US National Team to secure third all-time in the NCAA for career saves. Tomcikova also moved into a tie with Jessie Vetter for games played in the WCHA.

Julie Friend suffered the loss for St. Cloud State. Friend made 35 saves and gave up three goals on the afternoon.

Bemidji State will return to action tomorrow at 2:07 p.m. against St. Cloud State to wrap up the regular season.
