Tougas and Walters named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Kaitlyn Tougas (Fr., F, Thunder Bay, Ontario) and Mason Walters (Sr., F, Milton, Wis.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Jan. 7-13.

In her first two appearances of the calendar year, Tougas stepped in and made an instant impact for the BSU women’s ice hockey team logging two goals and an assist. The freshman forward registered her first point since Nov. 23 by assisting on Emily Erickson’s (F, Sr., Coleraine, Minn.) third-period goal in a 2-0 win Friday night and finished the game with a +1 rating.

Tougas follow-up performance Saturday was even more impressive. With her team down 3-0 and just over 11 minutes to play, the Thunder Bay, Ont. native struck twice during a 5:32 span to cut the Beavers’ deficit to one goal, allowing Erika Wheelhouse (D, Sr., Crookston, Minn.) to provide last-minute heroics to force overtime. Tougas became the first BSU player this season to score twice in a game and finished the night with a +3 rating.

The freshman’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks first of her career, while it is the fifth of 2012-13 for the BSU women’s hockey team. She follows Abby Ryplanski (Oct. 24), Emily Erickson (Nov. 21), Sadie Lundquist (Nov. 28) and Jessica Havel (Jan. 9).

On the season, Tougas has recorded 11 points (5g-6a) to lead all BSU rookies and sit fourth on the team in scoring.

Walters posted back-to-back double-doubles in a 1-1 NSIC home weekend for the BSU men’s basketball team Jan 11-12. He averaged 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game and shot 48.0 percent from the field. He now ranks second in the NSIC with five double-doubles on the season. In a 69-67 victory against Augustana Friday he totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds on 46.2 percent shooting. Saturday he recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds on 50 percent shooting. Eight of his 20 rebounds came on the offensive glass. He also added four steals, two assists and a block in 30.5 minutes per game.

Through 14 games, Walters is averaging 12.6 points per game to rank second on the team, while his 6.6 rebounds per contest paces all BSU players.

This week’s award stands as the second of the season for Walters and the fourth time a member of the BSU men’s basketball team has been selected for the honor.  In addition to his previous athlete of the week honor (Dec. 12), he follows Zach Noreen (F, Jr., Avon, Minn.), who on the award Nov. 21 and Dec. 5.

The BSU men’s basketball team, now 8-6 on the season and 6-4 in NSIC play, continues a three-game road trip Jan. 18-19 at Winona State University and Upper Iowa University.

The Bemidji State women’s hockey team (5-15-2; 4-13-1-0 WCHA) will travel to Duluth, Minn. to face University of Minnesota Duluth this weekend. The Friday-Saturday series games are set to begin at 7:07 p.m. each evening.
