Bulldogs shut out the Beavers, 3-0

DULUTH, Minn. (Amsoil Arena) – University of Minnesota Duluth used a goal in each period to knock off Bemidji State University Friday evening, 3-0. The loss was the first on the road this season for Beavers.

Bemidji State falls to 6-7-2 overall and 3-5-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, while Minnesota Duluth improves to 7-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in WCHA action.

BSU freshman goaltender Brittni Mowat (Glenboro, Manitoba) recoded 39 saves in the loss. Mowat’s record dips to 6-6-2.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after Ashleigh Brykaliuk scored her fourth goal of the season at the 15:13 mark on a power play. The goal was just the third marker BSU’s penalty killing unit has allowed in its opponent’s last 26 opportunities.

Bemidji State had opportunities to tie the game in the second period. BSU failed to convert any of its power-play chances in the stanza. UMD scored on one of those opportunities netting its fourth short-handed goal of the season with five seconds left in the period to make the score 2-0 at the end of two.

Like in the second period, the Beavers had opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the third, but they could not muster any offense versus the Bulldogs. BSU had three more power-play opportunities in the third period, but came up empty on all of them. It was the first time BSU was held without a power-play goal since Nov. 1 against North Dakota.

Bemidji State and UMD wrap up the series at 6:07 p.m. Saturday at Amsoil Arena.
