No. 2 Wisconsin shuts out Bemidji State, 6-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team (9-12-2, 6-10-1 WCHA) lost to No. 2 University of Wisconsin Friday afternoon by the score of 6-0. The Badgers used four goals in the second period to knock off BSU for the third time this season.  

Defense controlled the game in the opening period. The Beavers’ got in the Badgers’ shooting lanes to blocked nine shots in the first period. Wisconsin held the shooting edge in the frame, 11-6 which included two power-play chances. Despite being outshot by the Badgers, BSU held them off and the two teams went to the locker room with the score 0-0.

After the scoreless opening period, Wisconsin’s offense exploded in the second. The Badgers scored four goals on just eight shots. BSU had opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the second frame as it mustered 11 shots on net, but none lit the lamp. The Badgers headed into the second intermission with a 4-0 lead.

Wisconsin carried the momentum it garnered in the second frame into the third period. The Badgers lit the lamp twice in the final period and outshot BSU 16-2 in thanks in large part to four penalties called on the Beavers. BSU allowed a power-play goal to the Badgers at the 4:10 mark in the third. It was the first power-play goal given up by the Beavers in the second half of the season and first in 17 chances.

Brittni Mowat (G, Fr., Glenboro, Manitoba) was tagged with the loss to drop to 9-9-2 on the season. Mowat stopped 29 Badger shots in the contest.

The Beavers and the Badgers return to the ice at 2:07 p.m. Saturday for the series finale.
