BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team earned its first victory in over a month, Friday afternoon, as it defeated The Ohio State University 4-1 at the Sanford Center. The victory moves the Beavers just one point behind the Buckeyes for the fifth spot in the conference standings with three games to go.
Bemidji State opened the scoring with 15:12 gone in the opening period, getting a short-handed goal off the stick of Kaitlyn Tougas (F, So., Thunder Bay, Ontario). Tougas won the faceoff and went top shelf to give BSU the lead first for just the ninth time all season.
Just over a minute later, Bemidji State would add another goal from Kristine Grenier (F, Jr., St. Leon, Manitoba) to make the score 2-0. Tess Dusik (F, Sr., Oak Bluff, Manitoba) and Whitney Wivoda (F, R-So., Fairbanks, Alaska) chipped in helpers on Grenier’s goal. Dusik continues to be a thorn in the side of the Buckeyes as it was her ninth career point in 13 career games versus OSU.
Ohio State would come out firing in the second period however. OSU would outshoot BSU 15-4 after being outshot 14-7 in the first. The OSU flurry was aided by a five-minute major and game misconduct to Dusik for checking from behind. The penalty proved costly as OSU’s Taylor Kuehl got one past BSU goaltender Brittni Mowat (Fr., Glenboro, Manitoba) to cut BSU’s lead in half, 2-1.
The next goal came thanks to a face-off victory by freshman Lauren Miller (F, Brockville, Ontario) who passed to Tougas, then got it out to the point where senior Allie Duellman (D, Maplewood, Minn.) finished it off for her fourth goal of the season, giving the Beavers a 3-1 lead going into the final period.
The third stanza was the most even of the three frames. Shots were 10-9 and each team came up empty on their one power-play chance. The scoreboard did not change until two seconds left to go in the contest as Alex Citrowske (F, Jr., Savage, Minn.) netted an empty-net goal to give the Beavers a 4-1 victory.
Mowat earned her tenth victory of the season to make her record 10-15-3. With the ten victories, Mowat has set a new freshman record for wins in a season.
The Beavers will try to earn their first series sweep over an opponent since Nov. 15-16, against Minnesota State University, Mankato, in tomorrow’s series finale. The puck drops at 2:07 p.m.
