PITTSBURGH, Pa. (84 Lumber Arena) — The Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to skate to a 3-1 win over Robert Morris University at 84 Lumber Arena Saturday afternoon. The Beavers improve to 2-0-0 for the first time in program history with the victory.
Jenessa Philipcyzk (F, R-Jr., Stillwater, Minn.), Alexis Joyce (D, Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Stephanie Anderson (F, R-Jr., North St. Paul, Minn.) each netted goals for the Beavers and Kristin Huber (F, R-Jr., Kelowna, British Columbia) added an assist in the win. In net, Erin Deters (G, R-Fr., Sartell, Minn.) made 29 saves in her collegiate debut and got the win.
Robert Morris took an early 1-0 lead on a power-play goal from Erin Staniewski at 15:41 in the first, but the Beavers responded with a goal by Philipcyzk at 16:05 in the second to tie the game 1-1 going into the third period.
Bemidji State took the lead 2-1 at the 7:16 mark with the first collegiate goal from Joyce. RMU pulled its goalie, Courtney Vinet, late in the in the frame to gain an extra attacker. BSU took advantage of the empty net as Anderson lit the lamp for the second time in the series to seal BSU’s win, 3-1.
The Beavers open its 2014-15 home schedule next weekend with a rare split series against University of Vermont (Oct. 3) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Oct. 4). The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. from the Sanford Center both evenings.
