Bemidji State shuts out RPI, 4-0 and remain unbeaten this season

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) — The Bemidji State University women’s ice hockey team scored 16 seconds into the game and added three more goals in a 4-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the two school’s first ever meeting Saturday evening at the Sanford Center. The win moves the Beavers to 3-0-0 in 2014-15, while RPI moves to 0-2-0 this season.

Rachael Kelly (F, Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) and Megan Lushanko (F, Jr., Chisago City, Minn.) each registered a goal and an assist in the victory, and eight other Beavers registered a point in the win over the Engineers. In goal, Erin Deters (G, Fr., Sartell, Minn.) made 15 saves and earned her first career shutout. Deters is now 2-0-0 this season.

Junior Kristin Huber (F, Jr., Kelowna, British Columbia) got BSU on the board with a goal 16 seconds into the contest with her first goal of the season. It started with Stephanie Anderson (F, Jr., North St. Paul, Minn.) winning the opening faceoff and a couple of passes from Ivana Bilic (D, Jr., Coquitlam, British Columbia) and Kelly to give BSU an early 1-0 lead.

BSU added another at 17:39 in the second period with the first career goal from Summer Thibodeau (F, Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.). Fellow freshman Ciscely Nelson (F, Roseau, Minn.) also registered her first career point with an assist on the lamp lighter. Lushanko also chipped in a helper on Thibodeau’s first career goal.

Bemidji State added two more insurance markers in the third period 39 seconds from each other. Kelly netted her first goal of the season on a power play at 12:40. Lushanko followed that up with a goal of her own at 13:19 after deflecting a shot from Alex Bond (D, Fr., Barrie, Ontario) to give Bemidji State a 4-0 lead, which proved to be the final score.

Bemidji State looks to remain unbeaten tomorrow as it faces University of Vermont in a 2:07 p.m. non-conference tilt from the Sanford Center.
