No. 9 Beavers shut out Mavericks 2-0 to complete the sweep

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) — The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team notched its fourth shutout of the season as it knocked off Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday afternoon, 2-0. With the win, BSU improves to 10-5-1 overall and 6-5-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

Bemidji State struck first as Rachael Kelly put back a shot from fellow senior Kayleigh Chapman at the 8:51 mark in the first period to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead. The Beavers maintained pressure on the Mavericks for the majority of the period as they outshot their counterparts, 14-4. Despite the shot differential, the score remained 1-0 going into the first intermission.

After the fairly lopsided first frame, the Beavers and Mavericks nearly skated to a deadlock in the second and third periods. The shots over the final two periods were 23-22 in Bemidji State’s favor, but the one extra shot for BSU proved fruitful as Kaitlyn Tougas gave the Beavers a 2-0 at the 8:01 mark in the third period to seal the win.

Goaltender Brittni Mowat stopped all 26 shots she faced to improve to 8-3-1 on the season. The shutout was the third of the season and sixth of her career.
