Mowat guides BSU with 3-0 shutout at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The No. 9 Bemidji State University women’s hockey team earned a 3-0 victory against the University of Vermont Saturday afternoon to complete the sweep over the Catamounts. Junior Brittni Mowat earned her first shutout of the season after stopping all 30 shots by UVM.

Madison Hutchinson recorded two points for the second-consecutive game after tallying two assists. BSU had eight student-athletes tally points in the game, and Ciscely Nelson, Kristin Huber, and Hanna Moher each scored goals for the Beavers.

Once again this season, the Beavers scored the opening goal in the game after a scrum in front of the Catamount’s net and Nelson found and knocked in the loose puck for her first goal of the season with 4:46 remaining in the period. After the late goal, both teams would skate into the locker room with the score unchanged, but a late penalty by BSU game Vermont a power play to start the second period.

Bemidji State added another goal halfway through the second period when Huber tipped in a shot by Hutchinson. Late in the period, the Beavers would earn their first power play of the game with :33 remaining.

The Beavers started the third period with 1:27 left on their power play, but failed to find the net. Bemidji State would add a third goal in the period however, after Moher pushed her point streak to four games when she scored with 4:33 remaining.

Mowat earned her eleventh shutout of her career with the win, and improved her record to 3-0-0 this season. The Beavers penalty kill showed tremendous effort during the game and stopped all six chances by the Catamounts.

With the series sweep, Bemidji State wraps up its non-conference schedule and will host the University of Minnesota Duluth next weekend for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association match-up.
