Quick start by North Dakota derails Bemidji State

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Two quick goals in the first period leads University of North Dakota to a 5-2 win over the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team, Friday night in Western Collegiate Conference Hockey Association play. The Beavers (4-4-1, 2-4-1 WCHA) saw each goal scored by two of their freshman, Abby Halluska and Jacqueline Kaasa for each of their first collegiate goals.

North Dakota opened the scoring with a goal from Hallie Theodosopoulos just 2:06 into the opening period followed by another from Emma Nuutinen just seven minutes later. The Fighting Hawks extended their lead to three, 6:08 into the second period from a goal by senior Amy Menke.

Halluska tallied her first goal as a Beaver at 8:29 in the second to bring the Beavers within two but with just 3:23 remaining, Abbey Stanley scored to make it 4-1, UND. Bemidji State would answer quickly and Kaasa tallied her first as a Beaver with just 48 seconds left in the second period. However, the Beavers couldn’t find a way to beat senior goaltender Lexie Shaw in the final period and Menke tallied her second of the night with 1:45 remaining.

Senior Madison Hutchinson and freshman Haley Mack added assists during the game to round out the Beaver scoring. Senior goaltender Brittni Mowat made 25 saves in the game and falls to 3-4-1 on the season.

The Beavers will look to rebound tomorrow against the Fighting Hawks by hosting them at the Sanford Center at 3:07 p.m.
