No. 2 Minnesota completes sweep over Bemidji State with 4-1 victory

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team fell to No. 2 University of Minnesota, 4-1, Sunday afternoon in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Gophers (13-1-2, 11-1-2-2 WCHA) complete the sweep of the Beavers (5-10-1, 3-10-1 WCHA).

Senior Brittni Mowat made 45-of-49 saves for the Beavers, the second straight game she stopped 40 or more shots.

Senior Madison Hutchinson scored the lone goal for the Beavers in the second period while Jacqueline Kaasa tallied the lone assist on the goal.

Most of the first period was a defensive battle as neither team could beat each goaltender, but a late Bemidji State penalty in period gave Minnesota an extra attacker. The Gophers capitalized on the power play when Kelly Pannek found the back of the net with 2:49 left to play. Pannek wouldn’t be finished and just 15 seconds later, she tallied her second of the game to put the second-ranked team up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.

The second period began just as the first with neither team able to score, but the Beavers finally were able to beat the Gophers’ defense and scored their first goal of the series when Madison Hutchinson tallied her fourth goal of the season 12:16 into the period. However, Minnesota would respond six minutes later and extend its lead back to two when Dani Cameranesi scored with 1:51 remaining.

Cameranesi would add her second goal of the game 12:21 into the final period and Sydney Peters stopped all shots by the Beavers in the period to complete the sweep with the 4-1 victory.

Mowat ended the game with 45 saves for the Beavers for the first time in her career stopping 40 or more shots in back-to-back games. The Beavers had five power-play chances during the game but failed to score with the extra attacker while the Gophers went 1-for-2 on the power play.

Over the weekend, Mowat combined for 92 saves on 100 shots by the Gophers.

Bemidji State continues its road trip next weekend by traveling to Minnesota State University, Mankato to face the Mavericks. The series begins Dec. 2 with a pair of afternoon start times for the Friday-Saturday series.
