Beavers open WCHA series with 2-0 win at Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. (Verizon Wireless Center) -- Emma Terres scored her fourth goal of the season and Brittni Mowat turned aside 19 shots to collect her second shutout of 2016-17 and lead the Bemidji State University women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory marked the Beavers' third shutout of the 2016-17 season and halted a three-game losing skid dating back to Nov. 18.

After a scoreless first period, during which the Beavers out shot the Mavericks 11-4 aided by a pair of power-play chances, BSU was first to find the back of the net early in the second. Just 1:58 into the period, Terres scored an unassisted goal, her fourth of the season, to give the Beavers their first lead in nearly 11 periods of action.

The lead would carry into the third period when teammate Lauren Miller netter her fourth tally of 2016-17 at the 12:55 mark. Alexis Joyce and Madison Hutchinson were credited with assists on the play.

The rest was up to the Beavers' senior goaltender, which was perfect between the pipes. Mowat stopped four shots in the first, nine in the second and six in the third period as she improved to 5-9-1 on the year and collected her 17th career shutout.  She also backstopped a BSU penalty-kill unit that was 2-for-2 in the game.

Bemidji State, 6-10-1; 4-10-1 WCHA, will attempt to gain its first WCHA series sweep of the season tomorrow when it again faces Minnesota State. The opening face-off is set for 2:07 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Center.
