Huskies outlast Beavers in series opener, 5-2

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team fell to St. Cloud State University, 5-2, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series Friday afternoon. The Beavers (9-17-3, 5-17-3 WCHA) had freshman Kiki Radke and senior Lauren Miller scored both goals for Bemidji State.

Junior Alexis Joyce was the lone Beaver to tally multiple points in the game after recording an assist on each goal for BSU. Madison Hutchinson and Haley Mack each recorded an assist to round out the point scoring for the Beavers.

St. Cloud State scored the first goal of the game at 10:58 when freshman Brooke Kudirka beat Brittni Mowat on the glove side to go up 1-0. The Beavers responded quickly however, and at 13:25 Radke tallied her first goal since Dec. 3 after tapping in a rebounded shot by Alexis Joyce. Bemidji State dictated play for most of the first period and outshot the Huskies 12-5 in the first period, but freshman Janine Alder was strong in net and kept the score tied at one.

St. Cloud State came out of the first intermission firing and just 18 seconds into the second period, Hannah Potrykus gave the Huskies their second lead of the game. SCSU continued to set the pace of play and with a Beaver skater in the penalty box, Janna Haeg extended the Huskies lead to 3-1 just 3:02 into the period. The power-play goal for the Huskies was just their sixth of the season, last in Division I. St. Cloud State improved play throughout the period but still trailed the Beavers in shots 26-18 after two periods.

The Beavers pulled within one of the Huskies when Miller scored her second power-play goal and seventh goal of the season but 3:30 later St. Cloud State regained the two-goal lead when Julia Tylke took advantage of a turnover and beat Mowat with a back-handed shot. The Beavers pulled Mowat with 2:41 left to play looking to pull within one but a Beaver penalty with 1:25 left forfeited the extra attack for BSU. Payge Pena scored on the Beavers’ empty net to seal the 5-2 victory for SCSU.

Bemidji State outshot the Huskies 36-26 in the game but surrendered two power-play goals to nation’s worst power play unit. Mowat finished with 21 saves and falls to 8-16-3 on the season while SCSU’s Alder stopped 34-of-36 and improves to 9-13-4.

Bemidji State and St. Cloud State close out the series tomorrow afternoon when they play again at 3:07 p.m. Tomorrow’s game will also be broadcast on Fox Sports North but on FSN Plus for game two
