Friars score four-unanswered to stun Beavers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team scored three goals in the second period to go up 3-0 on Providence College but four-unanswered goals by the Friars (2-0-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East) gave them the series sweep. The Beavers fall to 0-4-0 (0-0-0-0 WCHA) to start the season and will have next weekend off before traveling to University of Minnesota Duluth.

Sophomores Clair DeGeorge, Lindsey Featherstone and Tina Kampa all scored for the Beavers while Briana Jorde, Emily Bergland, Ellie Moser and Abby Halluska each added assists. Redshirt-sophomore Lauren Bench started in goal for the Beavers and earned 23 saves but falls to 0-2-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Beavers jumped on the scoreboard first for the first time this season when Clair DeGeorge scored just 3:24 into the middle frame for her first goal and point of the season. Just 1:03 later, sophomore Lindsey Featherstone extended the Beavers’ lead to 2-0 on her first goal as well. The Beavers didn’t stop there and at 9:43, sophomore Tina Kampa fired a shot from the point and past the Friar’s goaltender for the 3-0 lead at the mid-way point of the game. Providence would answer back however, and at 11:25 Sara Hjalmarsson scored the Friar’s first goal and Maureen Murphy pulled PC within one with a goal with 1:55 left in the period.

The third period would belong to the Friars as Providence would go on to score two goals in the period to complete the comeback and win 4-3. Murphy would start the scoring in the period with her second goal of the game and third of the series at 7:25 while Neve Van Pelt scored at 10:58 for the game-winning goal.
