Four-goal first period earns Beavers sweep of Dutchwomen

BEMIDJI, Minn. - After falling down 1-0 early in the first period, The Bemidji State University women's hockey team scored four-unanswered goals in the first period en route to a 6-2 and series sweep of Union College, Saturday. The Beavers (7-13-1, 4-7-1-0 WCHA) saw five different goal scorers in the game including two from sophomore Clair DeGeorge while sophomore Kerigan Dowhy stopped 18-of-20 shots for her fourth victory of the season.

11 Beavers recorded a point in the game with DeGeorge being the lone Beaver to tally two.

Freshman Ellie Moser tied the game for the Beavers just 3:37 after Makayla Mori put the Dutchwomen (2-16-2, 0-7-1 ECAC) up 1-0. Bemidji State the exploded for three goals over the next seven minutes to take a 4-1 lead. DeGeorge followed Moser with her fifth goal of the season just 1:05 after the game-tying goal followed by Jacqueline Kaasa’s eventual game-winning goal just 2:14 after that. Junior Abby Halluska rounded out the Beavers’ scoring in the first period with her third tally of the season at 18:01 of the period.

Union then made a goaltending change following the Beavers’ fourth goal looking to spark a comeback. The change helped the Dutchwomen in the second period with Coco Francis denying all 13 shots by the Beavers in the period. The Dutchwomen scored the lone goal in the second period when Rachel de Perio found herself behind the Beavers’ defense shorthanded to score her third goal of the season.

Much of the third period would be back and forth between the two teams and no break in the scoring. The Beavers would eventually find the back of the net again when Paige Beebe stole the puck from Union’s defense and scored her fifth goal of the season with 3:24 left to play. DeGeorge would seal the Beavers’ victory with an empty-net goal with 1:34 left to play to push the score to 6-2.

Bemidji State outshot Union 37-20 in the game but came up empty on both of its power play chances and allowed a shorthanded goal. The Beavers killed of the Dutchwomen’s lone power play of the game to extend its penalty kill streak to 26.

Bemidji State remains at home next weekend and resumes Western Collegiate Hockey Association play by hosting rival University of Minnesota Duluth for a two-game series at Sanford Center, Jan. 11-12.
