Three-goal, third period by Bulldogs downs Beavers

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team and University of Minnesota Duluth were tied 2-2 after the first 40 minutes Saturday afternoon but the Bulldogs (8-10-2, 5-7-2-2 WCHA) scored three, unanswered goals in the final period to earn the series split with the Beavers (8-14-1, 5-8-1-0 WCHA).

Sophomore Clair DeGeorge posted a goal and assist in the game for the Beavers including the game-tying goal at 15:21 of the second period. DeGeorge has now scored six points (3g-3a) in the last three games and has tallied two points in three consecutive games. Junior defender Briana Jorde scored the game's first goal and her first goal of the season 2:30 into the opening period to round out the Beavers' scoring.

Redshirt sophomore Lauren Bench totaled 22 saves in the game while Minnesota Duluth outshot Bemidji State, 27-25.

Following Jorde’s early goal, the Bulldogs evened the score late into the first period when Gabbie Hughes jabbed in a loose puck in a scrum in front of the crease with just 1:45 left to enter the first intermission even at 1-1. The Bulldogs then scored the next goal when Ryleigh Houston once again corralled a loose puck in front of the crease to give the Bulldogs’ their first lead of the series at 2:39 of the second period. Bemidji State responded however, and at 15:21 of the period, DeGeorge fired the puck past Emma Soderberg on a partial breakaway for her team leading seventh goal of the season.

Each team headed into the locker room with the score knotted at 2-2. Minnesota Duluth retook the lead midway through the third when Anna Klein beat Bench high blocker at 8:12 and Anneke Linser extended to Bulldogs’ lead to 4-2 just 2:30 later. The pair of goals seemed to deflate the Beavers’ bench and with just 3:08 remaining, UMD once again found the back of the net when Ashton Bell capitalized off a Beaver turnover in front of the net.

Bemidji State went without a power play during the game while its penalty kill stopped Minnesota Duluth on both of its chances.

UMD net minder Soderberg improved to 3-0-0 on the season in just her third start after denying 23-of-25 shots by BSU.

Bemidji State will look to next Saturday when the Beavers take part in Hockey Day in Minnesota by hosting Minnesota State University outdoors in front of Lake Bemidji. Festivities will kick-off at 9 a.m. Saturday and tickets are still available for $35.
