BEMIDJI, Minn. – In below freezing temperatures, the Bemidji State University women's hockey team took to the outdoors to face Minnesota State University, Mankato in part of 2019 Hockey Day in Minnesota. The Beavers (8-15-1, 5-8-1-0 WCHA) were bested by the Mavericks (9-11-4, 3-10-2-1 WCHA) in a low scoring affair, 2-1, in non-conference action.
Bemidji State out-shot Minnesota State 22-20 in the game that started with -5 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures outside on the Hockey Day Minnesota Rink off the south shore of Lake Bemidji. Sophomore Mak Langei scored the lone Beaver goal at 12:45 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1 but a Brittyn Fleming deflected-goal just 3:34 later gave the Mavericks the 2-1 edge.
Minnesota State’s Brooke Bryant opened the scoring just 1:46 into the game by stick handling her way past a BSU defender and beat goaltender Lauren Bench high glove for her seventh goal of the season. The Beavers then earned the game’s only power play at 11:00 after an interference call and late into the penalty, Langei fired a shot from the point that found its way through three players and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and the Beavers’ first power-play goal since Nov. 30.
Bemidji State totaled eight shots in the second period but were held off the scoreboard by freshman goaltender Abigail Levy for the final 47:15. Fleming scored the game-winning goal at 16:19 of the second period after she deflected a shot from Emily Antony that went five-hole on freshman goaltender Lexi Baker. BSU totaled five shots on goal in the third period while MSU totaled six with each goaltender keeping their opponents off the scoresheet in the final frame.
Bemidji State used all three of its rostered goaltenders in Lauren Bench, Lexi Baker and Kerigan Dowhy to make sure every member of the Beaver squad took part in the uniqueness of Hockey Day. Baker earned her first loss of the season after allowing the game-winning goal but led the Beavers with seven saves. Dowhy followed with six saves in the third while Bench started the game and made five saves.
Bemidji State and Minnesota State will meet again in one week and will play a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series in Mankato, Minn., for the two team’s final regular season series.
