Bench posts 41 saves and Beebe scores late but Beavers fall 4-1 at No. 1 Badgers

MADISON, Wis. – Redshirt junior goaltender Lauren Bench stopped 41-of-45 shots by No. 1 University of Wisconsin and junior Paige Beebe scored with 1:50 remaining but the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team fell to the Badgers (10-0-0, 4-0-0-0 WCHA) 4-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Sunday afternoon.

The Beavers fall to 3-4-1 on the season and are now 2-2-0-0 in league play. Wisconsin out-shot the Beavers 45-15 in the game.

Wisconsin started the scoring just 4:27 into the opening period when Abby Roque scored her ninth goal of the season. The Badgers added to their tally just before the period’s end and at 17:16 Daryl Watts extended their lead to 2-0. Wisconsin would then make it 3-0 in the middle period when Sophie Shirley scored her 10th goal of the season just 1:11 into the second period.

Wisconsin extended its lead to four goals when Caitlin Schneider scored just 3:22 into the third period. Bemidji State ended Kristen Campbell’s shutout however, when Beebe intercepted a pass out of the zone and put a shot that trickled past Campbell with just 1:50 remaining for her third goal of the season.

Bemidji State’s penalty kill shined in the game and held the nation’s top-ranked power play scoreless on all four of its chances. However, the Beavers’ came up empty on all five of its power-play chances in the game.

With the loss, Bench falls to 2-4-0 on the season while Campbell remains unbeaten at 9-0-0.

Bemidji State returns home to host No. 9 Ohio State University next weekend when the two teams square off for a WCHA series beginning Friday, Nov. 1 at 6:07 p.m.
