Beavers skate to 1-1 tie with Minnesota State; Mavericks earn extra point in 3-on-3 overtime

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Minnesota State University, Mankato Friday night but the Mavericks earned the extra point in league standings by scoring during the 3-on-3 overtime period. The Beavers (13-12-2, 7-9-1-0 WCHA) earned one point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

Junior Paige Beebe scored the lone goal for the Beavers 1:44 into the game while redshirt junior Lauren Bench stopped 26-of-28 shots by the Mavericks (8-14-5, 3-11-3-3 WCHA). Bemidji State out-shot the Mavericks 33-28 in the game.

Bemidji State rolled in the first period and dominated puck possession to out-shot Minnesota State 10-5 in the opening frame. The Beavers wasted no time to get on the scoreboard when Beebe shot the puck from below the left circle that bounced off a Mavericks defender and into the back of the net just 1:44 into the hockey game.

However, the Mavericks responded in the next two periods to outshoot the Beavers 21-19 over the final 40 minutes. Bench held MSU scoreless on its eight shots during the middle frame and scoreless for the next 12 shots in the third period. However, a late penalty by the Beavers gave Minnesota State a power play with 3:37 to play and this time Mavericks' forward Emily Antony would bounce the puck off of a defender and into the back of the net for the equalizing goal with just 1:46 remaining.

Neither team would be able to score in the five-minute overtime period to earn the victory and each team earned a point in the WCHA standings. Bemidji State would get its first taste of 3-on-3 overtime hockey seeking the extra point and almost ended the game off the stick of Kiki Radke but an ensuing counter attack allowed Kelsey King and Anna Wilgren capitalize on the two-on-one to end the game and earn their team the extra point.

Minnesota State goaltender Abigail Levy earned 32 saves off of 33 shots for the Mavericks and her record now stands at 4-9-3 on the season while Bench is 10-10-1 in the crease this season.

Minnesota State scored on its lone power play in the game while the Beavers were 0-for-1 on its lone chance.

Bemidji State and Minnesota State play the series finale tomorrow afternoon at 3:07 p.m. looking to improve their position in the league standings.
