MANKATO, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team held a 3-2 lead at the start of the third period but a three-goal third period by Minnesota State University, Mankato earned the 5-3 victory for the Mavericks. The Beavers conclude play in 2020 with the loss and fall to 1-2-1 on the season.
Junior Ellie Moser, senior Paige Beebe and junior Graysen Myers each scored for the Beavers while Beebe (1g-1a), senior Tina Kampa (2a) and sophomore Reece Hunt (2a) each led the team with two points.
Minnesota State opened the scoring during the first period when Jamie Nelson scored a power-play goal 15:16 into the opening frame.
Bemidji State was unable to respond in the final minutes of the first period but just 1:29 into the second, Ellie Moser scored her second goal of the series to tie the game after receiving a back-door pass from Lindsey Featherstone in front of the net. The Beavers then took its first lead of the game when Paige Beebe one-timed the puck past the glove of MSU goaltender Lauren Barbro at the 9:22 mark of the period.
Minnesota State responded just 4:14 later when Claire Butorac scored her first goal of the season just above the right circle. However, right before the period ended, Graysen Myers corralled a loose puck in front of the Maverick’s crease and was able to put it past Barbro for her first goal of season with just 16.2 seconds remaining.
Just as the second period belonged to the Beavers, the third period was dominated by the Mavericks. Minnesota State responded in the final frame with three goals to steal the victory away from the Beavers. They began the period with a power-play goal from Kelsey King at 7:06 in the period to tie the game and then with 4:29 left, Madison Mashuga gave the Mavericks the 4-3 lead with her first career goal.
Minnesota State sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 23 seconds remaining.
The Beavers were outshot in the game 29-17 with Lauren Barbro earning her first career victory after stopping 14-of-17 shots. Senior goaltender Kerigan Dowhy falls to 1-2-1 on the season after she stopped 24-of-28 shots.
