Beavers claim third place finish with win over MSU
MANKATO, Minn. – In the final game of the regular season, the Bemidji State University soccer team defeated the Minnesota State Mavericks 1-0 on Sunday to claim third place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. With the third place finish, the Beavers will host the first-round playoff game against Augustana College on Wednesday Nov. 3.

Goalkeeper Samantha Ross (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) had a tremendous effort in net for the Beavers making 12 saves in the game to pick up her 10th career shutout and sixth of the season. Ross made eight of her 12 saves in the second half alone to keep hold of the clean sheet.

Bri Scanlan (Jr., Fwd., East Grand Forks, Minn.) scored for the second time over the weekend, scoring the lone goal for Bemidji State. In the 50th minute, Scanlan netted her third game winner of the season.

Offensively the Mavericks controlled the game, out-shooting the Beavers 22-7, shots on target being 12-4 in MSU’s favor.

With the win the Beavers set a new mark in school history capturing 13 wins in a season. It is also the team’s ninth conference win which ties for the most conference wins in a season. The previous time the soccer team has won nine conference games in a season was in 2005 when the Beavers went 9-1-4 in conference play.

With the No. 3 seed, the Beavers will play host to the Augustana College Vikings on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the first round of NSIC playoffs. The semifinals and finals will be hosted by the highest remaining seed after the first round and will be played on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
