Erickson nets Bemidji State game-winner in 106th minute
Beavers earn 1-0 overtime victory at Northern State
ABERDEEN, S.D. (Jerde Field) -- After more than 100 minutes of action Sunday, the Bemidji State University soccer team’s leading scorer, Kirsten Erickson (Sr., F, Coon Rapids, Minn.), broke the scoreless tie to give the Beavers their fifth victory of the season, 1-0, at Northern State University.

Through 90 minutes of rainy regulation and the entire 10-minute first overtime period, the scoreboard displayed 0-0, but in the 106th minute, Erickson got free and put the ball just over the outstretched fingertips of the Wolves goaltender Shaina Stein from 25 yards out.  The goal not only secured the BSU win, it also stood as Erickson’s team-leading eighth goal of the season and fifth game-winner--both career-highs.

The Beavers held an overwhelming edge in shots and quality scoring chances throughout the match.  BSU out shot NSU 21-6 on the afternoon, with a 10-1 lead in shots on goal, But it was not until the 106th minute that it mattered.  Stein turned away nine BSU shots, including three in the final six minutes of the game alone, before allowing the game-winning goal late in the final overtime frame.

BSU also held the lead in corner kicks, 5-1.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Kjonaas (Fargo, N.D.) was not tested often, but made one save to register her fourth solo shutout of the season. She moves to 4-4-1 on the season.

The double-overtime draw marks the Beavers’ fifth overtime game of the season and second of the weekend following a 2-2 tie at the University of Mary Saturday.  BSU is now 3-0-2 in games extended beyond 90 minutes.

The Beavers (5-5-2; 4-2-2- NSIC) return home next weekend to host a pair of NSIC matches and begin a six-match home stretch to cap the regular season. Saturday the team welcomes Augustana College and Wayne State College comes to Bemidji, Minn. Sunday.  Both matches are set for 1 p.m. starts from the BSU Soccer Complex.
