McLeod provides spark in 1-0 victory over Northern Michigan

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Soccer Complex) -- Sophomore Maria McLeod (F, White Bear Lake, Minn.) provided all the offense the Bemidji State University soccer team would need on a blustery Saturday afternoon at the BSU Soccer Complex. The sophomore scored the game's only goal, while goalkeeper Sonja Barr (So., GK, Duluth, Minn.), posted a clean slate to give the Beavers a 1-0, nonconference win over Northern Michigan University in the team's 2012 opener.

Outshot 20-12 in the game, the Beavers took advantage of the opportunities they had logging five shots on goal, which included the game's only goal, to NMU's four.

McLeod's first collegiate goal gave the Beavers the lead in the 23rd minute.  Mary O'Brien (So., F, Maplewood, Minn.) started the scoring play from deep in the left corner.  She sent a crossing pass to Emily Olson (Fr., M, Stillwater, Minn.), who found McLeod alone on the goal line for her first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner. The assist was also the first of Olson's BSU career.

With the wind at their backs and clinging to a 1-0 lead in the second half, the Beavers controlled play, holding a 7-5 edge in shots and served up five of their six corner kicks during the final 45 minutes.

Barr collected four saves en route to her first shutout of the season and the second of her BSU career. She is 1-0 in 2012.

The Beavers improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-2 after suffering a 4-0 loss at University of Minnesota Duluth Friday.

Including today’s win, BSU has now won four of its last five season-opening games and is 6-5 in season-openers under the direction of Head Coach Jim Stone.

Bemidji State continues nonconference play tomorrow when it hosts Michigan Tech at the BSU Soccer Complex in a 1 p.m. contest.
