VanHaaften's overtime goal lifts Bemidji State to 2-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Soccer Complex) -- It wasn't easy, but the Bemidji State University soccer team escaped from its Sunday matinee versus Michigan Tech with a 3-2 victory.

Junior Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Chaska, Minn.) found the back of the net 4:25 into overtime to break the 2-2 tie, solidify the win and push the Beavers' record to 2-0 on the season.

After taking an early 1-0 lead (8:47) on a Jessie Voeller (Jr., F, White Bear Lake, Minn.) goal, the Beavers found themselves down 2-1 at the 78:02 mark.  Mary O'Brien (So., F, Maplewood, Minn.) got BSU to overtime when she tapped the ball across the goal line at the 81:15 mark and  when a Megan Castro (Fr., M, Winnipeg, Manitoba) shot defected off the crossbar, VanHaaften was in the right place at the tight time and headed the game-winner past the Michigan Tech goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.

Brittany Tietz (Fr., GK, Aberdeen, S.D.) earned the victory in her collegiate debut, posting five saves in 49:25 of relief for Sonja Barr (So., GK, Duluth, Minn.).

The Beavers open their longest road swing of the season at 4 p.m. Friday when they travel to Fargo, N.D. for a nonconference contest versus NCAA Division I North Dakota State University.  The team then opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Sunday with a trip to Crookston, Minn. to face University of Minnesota, Crookston in a 1 p.m. affair.
