MANKATO, Minn. (The Pitch at Gage Tower) -- The Minnesota Sate University, Mankato soccer team handed Bemidji State University its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) loss of the season, cruising to a 5-0 win Sunday in Mankato, Minn.
MSU got on the board in the seventh minute when a penalty was called against the Beavers. Minnesota State midfielder Cassie Weik took the free kick from outside the 18-yard box and knocked one past freshman goaltender Brittany Tietz (Fr., Aberdeen, S.D.). Weik would strike again to stretch the Mavericks’ lead to 2-0, when she was awarded with another free kick in the 30th minute and the Mavericks would take a 2-0 lead into half time.
Bemidji State came out strong in the second half but a Maverick goal in the 50th minute put MSU up 3-0. MSU put two more in the net before the final horn.
The Beavers were outshot 34-8 in the game.
Tietz made five saves and allowed two goals in the first 45 minutes of play, while sophomore goaltender Sonja Barr (So., Duluth, Minn.) played the second half in net, made nine saves and was responsible for three goals allowed. Tietz was tagged with the loss and is now 2-2-0 on the season.
