O'Brien leads Bemidji State to victory over Wayne State, 4-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Soccer Complex) -- Bemidji State sophomore Mary O'Brien (F, Maplewood, Minn.) scored twice and assisted on the Beavers' other two goals, leading BSU to a 4-0 victory over Wayne State Saturday at the BSU Soccer Complex.

The Beavers took the lead early in the first minute when O’Brien shot the ball past Wayne State goalkeeper Courtney True off a pass from freshman Megan Castro (Fr., M, Winnipeg, Manitoba).

Bemidji State would make it 2-0 when O’Brien passed a through ball to freshman Hillary Arechigo (Fr., F, Monticello, Minn.), who dribbled by a defender and crossed it to Castro, who was waiting in at the top of the six yard box. Castro fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net to score her first colligate goal. The assist was also a first career point for Arechigo.

BSU controlled the first half outshooting the Wildcats 12-8 and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Beavers picked up where they left off in the second half when O’Brien scored her second goal of the game, and team-leading fourth goal of the season, in the 55th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Sonja Barr (So., GK, Duluth, Minn.) was credited with the assist as she punted the ball over a WSC defender and O’Brien was able to run it down and place the ball into the corner.

Bemidji State collected its final goal in the 58th minute when Voeller tailed her second goal of the season by striking the ball off the near post and into the net after a pass from O’Brien. Junior Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Chaska, Minn.) was also credited with an assist.

BSU outshout Wayne State 21-13 and posted 10 shots on goal.

Barr made four saves in the game and recorded her second shutout of the season. She is now 2-0-1 on the season.

BSU improves to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in NSIC play.  The team will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts Augustana College in a 1 p.m. NSIC match up at the BSU Soccer Complex.
