Beavers edge Augustana 2-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Soccer Complex) -- Jess Voeller (Jr., F, White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored in the 77th minute of play to give the Bemidji State University soccer team its first lead, propelling the Beavers to a 2-1 victory over Augustana College in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Sunday at the BSU Soccer Complex.

After 43 minutes of scoreless play the Beavers found themselves down when Augustana was able to put one in the back of the net off a Shelia Grogan shot from outside the 18-yard line.

The game was close throughout the first half with both teams getting six shots off but Auggie was able to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

BSU battled back to tie the game just four minutes into the second half when junior Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Chaska, Minn.) slotted a through ball to leading goal scorer Mary O'Brien (F, So., Maplewood.). O’Brien ran past an Augustana defender and shot the ball into the left corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season and third goal of the weekend.

The game remained tied until the 76th minute when Voeller beat Augustana Goalkeeper Ashley Limmer to the ball and chipped it over her head for her third goal of the season. O’Brien was credited with an assist on the play.

Bemidji State was outshot in the game 15-9 while notching four shots on goal.

BSU goalkeeper Sonja Barr (So., Duluth, Minn.) played a crucial role in the win turning aside seven Viking's shots including a clutch punch save in the final minutes of the game. She allowed one goal to improve to 3-0-1 on season and help the Beavers stay unbeaten at home (4-0-0).

O’Brien had a hand in every goal that was scored this weekend for the Beavers. She scored three goals and had three assists to rack up a nine-point weekend.

Bemidji State improves to 5-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in NSIC play.  The team returns to action next weekend as it hits the road for a NSIC twin bill.  The Beavers travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to meet league newcomer University of Sioux Falls, Saturday at 1 p.m., with a match at Southwest Minnesota State University set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
