Bemidji State begins four-game home stand

BEMIDJI, Minn. --The Bemidji State University soccer team returns to the BSU Soccer Complex to begin a four-game homestand this weekend. The Beavers welcome a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foes; Minnesota State University Moorhead takes the field at 1 p.m. Saturday and Northern State University challenges the Beavers 1 p.m. Sunday. 

Bemidji State (7-2-1, 5-1-1 NSIC) has done well defending its home field by compiling a 4-0 record at home thus far this season.

MSUM (2-7-1, 1-5-1 NSIC) is looking to snap a five game losing streak after falling to Upper Iowa University, 2-1, and Winona State University, 5-1 last weekend. The Dragons last victory came on September 15th when they defeated Wayne State 4-3 in overtime.

Bemidji State is 8-12-1 versus MSUM all-time and last lost to the Dragons in 2008. Last season, the Beavers battled MSUM to a 0-0 draw. 

Northern State (2-7-1, 1-5-1 NSIC) is coming off a 1-1 weekend defeating Upper Iowa, 2-1, and falling to Winona, 7-1. NSU is led by senior Rachel Goslinga (7g, 2a). 

The Beavers have a series record of 5-13-3 with the Wolves after defeating them 1-0 in double overtime in 2011. 

Last weekend the Beavers swept its weekend series for the second weekend in a row beating University of Sioux Falls (0-10-0, 0-7-0 NSIC) 2-1 Saturday afternoon and gaining the victory Sunday 1-0 over Southwest Minnesota State University (5-4-0, 3-4-0 NSIC). With the sweep, the Beavers' are now on a four game winning streak.

Sophomore Mary O’Brien (So., F, Maplewood, Minn.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season on Saturday against Sioux Falls while freshman Megan Castro (M, Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored her second of the season in the match. Freshman Carly Dietrich (Fr., D, St. Charles, Ill.) scored the lone goal on Sunday versus SMSU of an indirect free kick. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.

O'Brien is now third in NSIC standings in goals scored in overall games with six and second in points in overall games with 16.

Tiffany VanHaaften (Jr., M, Chaska, Minn.) is ranked 33rd in the nation in assists in overall games. Vanhaaften has five assists in 10 games played.   

Sophomore goalkeeper Sonja Barr (So., GK, Duluth, Minn.) posted nine saves over the weekend including an eight-save shutout against Southwest to record her third blank sheet of the season. Barr was named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week for her efforts. The award is the second of her career.

In the NSIC standings, Barr is third in shutouts in overall games with three and third in shutouts in just conference games with two. 

Both Barr and Brittany Tietz (Fr., Aberdeen, S.D.) have combined for 64 saves so far this season giving BSU a fourth place spot in saves in overall games. 

The Beavers earned the ninth place spot in this week’s edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Central Region Poll. This is the third time Bemidji State has been placed in the poll  earning No. 8 ranking last week's and in the first edition of the poll.
