Bemidji State to battle Upper Iowa Saturday; Winona State Sunday

BEMIDJI, Minn. –The Bemidji State University soccer team puts its six-game winning streak on the line this weekend as it hosts Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents Upper Iowa University and Winona State University at the BSU Soccer Complex Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Bemidji State (9-2-1, 7-1-1 NSIC) remains unbeaten while playing at home (6-0) and is currently riding a six-game winning streak. The winning streak ties the programs best winning streak of all time. The last time Bemidji State won six games in a row was from Sept.3-Sept.25 of 2010. The Beavers only conference loss was to No. 3 Minnesota State Mankato Sept. 16. BSU fell 5-0 to the Mavericks. 

Upper Iowa (9-2-1, 6-2-1 NSIC) is coming off a (1-0-1) weekend defeating Sioux Falls, 10-0 and playing Southwest Minnesota State to a 0-0 draw. The Peacocks are led by sophomore Kali Loescher (5g, 1a).

Bemidji State is 5-3 versus Upper Iowa all-time and defeated the Peacocks 1-0 in double overtime last season.

Winona State (9-3, 8-1 NSIC) swept last weekend beating Southwest Minnesota State, 1-0 and Sioux Falls, 2-0. The Warriors only NSIC loss has been to Minot State on Sept. 23 (1-0).

The Beavers have a series record of 2-16-1 versus the Warriors with the two victories coming in 2009 and 2010. Last season, Bemidji State fell to WSU 1-0. 

Last weekend the Beavers swept its weekend series for the third weekend in a row defeating MSU Moorhead (3-8-1, 2-6-1 NSIC) 2-1 Saturday afternoon and gaining the victory Sunday 1-0 over Northern State (3-8-1, 2-6-1 NSIC). 

Sophomore Mary O’Brien (So., F, Maplewood, Minn.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season and second game-winner of the year on Saturday against MSUM while freshman Hillary Arechigo (Fr., F, Monticello, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal in the match. Sophomore Maria McLeod (F, White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored the lone goal on Sunday versus Northern State. The goal was McLeod’s second of the season. 

Arechigo also added an assist on O’Brien’s goal to compile a three-point weekend and was named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week for her efforts.

O’Brien is tied for first in NSIC standings in goals scored in conference games (5) and third in points in conference games (13).

Sophomore goalkeeper Sonja Barr (So., GK, Duluth, Minn.) posted 16 saves over the weekend including a seven-save shutout against Northern State to record her fourth blank sheet of the season.

In the NSIC standings, Barr is now second in saves in conference games with 52 and third in shutouts in conference games with three.

Both Barr and Brittany Tietz (Fr., Aberdeen, S.D.) have combined for 80 saves so far this season giving BSU a third place spot in saves in overall games. 

Saturday is Senior Day for Bemidji State and the Beavers will recognize thier lone senior Mallory Lowe (Sr., D, Lino Lakes, Minn.).

As an effort to raise awareness of cancer and cancer research during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cheryl Smyth Cancer Awareness Game will be held Sunday. The BSU soccer team will sport pink shirts Saturday as it hosts Winona State. The game is in honor of former member of the BSU soccer team Kara Smyth’s mother, who lost her battle with cancer two years ago. The Normal price for tickets or a free will offering will allow admittance & go towards a local soccer family (Steve Berard Family) who is battling cancer. There will also be a silent auction for a Nike BSU Soccer warm-up along with t-shirt sales that will go towards the fight against cancer.

The Beavers earned the eight place spot in this week’s edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Central Region Poll. This is the fourth time Bemidji State has been placed in the poll earning No. 9 last week and No. 8 twice before. Upper Iowa earned the tenth spot while Winona State earned the seventh spot in the same poll.
