SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Morstad Field) – The Bemidji State University soccer team scored first and was within a minute of earning a 1-1 draw at Augustana College Saturday, but Stephanie Stephens found the back of the net with just 52 seconds remaining in overtime to steal the victory for the Vikings.
The Loss drops the Beavers to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while AC improved to 6-1 on the season with a 4-0 mark in league action.
The teams played a scoreless first half in Sioux Falls, S.D. despite the Vikings holding an 11-4 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The Beavers took the first lead of the game on an unassisted goal by Sarah Stram (F, Fr., Elk Grove Village, Ill.) in the 73rd minute. The newcomer’s team-leading fourth goal of the season came on a shot off the dribble to the right side of the goal.
The Vikings responded with an equalizer less than four minute later. Maren Werth buried a header off Taylor Brownrigg’s corner kick in the 77th minute of play.
The teams played 1-1 soccer to the end of regulation and through the first nine minutes of the 10-minute overtime frame, but AC caught a break when Katie Hurd found Stephens with a pass in the 100th minute. Stephens deposited the game-winner into in the lower left corner of the goal.
The setback marked the Beavers’ first road loss of the season and brings their road record to 2-1.
Bemidji State continues its current road trip with a trip to Wayne, Neb. Sunday. Its NSIC matchup versus Wayne State College is set for a 1 p.m. start.
