Beavers edge MSU-Moorhead in overtime, 2-1

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- For the second time in as many days, the Bemidji State University soccer team needed overtime to decide its match. Sunday, it was Sam Lumberg (D, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) who assumed the role of hero, scoring her first goal of the season during the 97th minute of play to lift the Beavers to a 2-1 victory at Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

Trailing 1-0 with just 13 minutes to play, BSU senior Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Chaska, Minn.) took a pass from BSU's top scorer, freshman Sarah Stram (F, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), and evened the score, 1-1, with her second goal of the 2013 season.

The score would remain tied to the end of the half pushing the Beavers into their third overtime game of the season and their second of the weekend.

Dominating play through the first 90 minutes, the Beavers opened the extra frame after firing a season-high 26 shots, owning a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.

The teams felt each other out during thee first six minutes of overtime, but BSU got the break it needed in the 97th minute after applying significant pressure. Jessie Voeller (F, Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) logged overtime's first shot on goal. MSUM's goalkeeper Carole Braschayko made the save, but the Beavers forced its ninth a corner kick of the afternoon. Lumberg's goal came out of traffic in front of the goal following Abby Nyquist's (D, So., Golden Valley, Minn.) corner.

Sonja Barr (GK, Jr., Duluth, Minn.) picked up her second victory of the season and pushed her record to 6-1-0, holding the Dragon’s scoreless during the final 23:08 of the game in relief of Amanda Garvin (GK, Fr., Claremont, Calif.). Garvin collected three saves and allowed one goal in 73:48.
