Bemidji State soccer embarks on tough NSIC road weekend

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team heads south as it hits the road for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches this weekend. The Beavers will face Winona State University Friday at 5 p.m. before wrapping up their weekend at Upper Iowa University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

(F, Elk Grove Village, Ill) earned two assists to and Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Sr., Chaska, Minn.) collected two goals help the Beavers achieve two league victory’s Oct. 12-13. BSU won a 1-0 nail bitter against Northern State University Saturday, and came out with a 2-1 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead Sunday. Sonja Barr (GK, Jr. Duluth, Minn.) picked up two wins on weekend making five saves and pushing her record to 6-1-0.

The Beavers are now 9-3 on the season and 6-3 in NSIC play.

Scouting Winona State University
Winona State University hosts Bemidji State with a record of 8-2-2 on the 2013 season. Kati Baker, who has three goals and an assist, giving her seven points this season, leads the Warriors. Goalkeeper Alexandra Vial has been a vital part of the Warriors' success as she has an 8-2-2 record with six shutouts and an .879 save percentage.

Series Notes
Bemidji State and Winona State have met 20 times prior to this weekends match. Winona has dominated the series with a record of 17-2-1. However, the Beavers are 2-2 in the last four meetings between the teams. Their last win in the series came by a 3-2 score September 25, 2010.

Scouting Upper Iowa University
Upper Iowa University hosts Bemidji State with a record of 9-3 on the 2013 season. Upper Iowa is led Aimee Wronski, who has 10 goals and two assists giving her 22 points this season, which includes five game-winning goals. Another big contributor on offense this year is Madie Edwards, who has four goals and three assists giving her 11 points this season.

Series Notes
Bemidji State and Upper Iowa have met nine times prior to this weekends match. Bemidji holds the series lead with a 5-4 record. The Beavers have a 1-4 record over the last five matches against Upper Iowa. Their last win in the series came by a 1-0 (OT) score September 24, 2011.

What to watch for
The Beavers are 5-1 on the road so far this year, which is the best road record since 2010.

Sonja Barr has jumped up to number three all-time in Bemidji for wins in a career with 16.

Barr is also nationally ranked eighth in the nation for save percentage with .919. She is also ranked 16th nationally for goals-against average with a .460.

Bemidji State looks to keep its fast-paced start going this weekend. The Beavers have out scored their opponents 13 to 3 in the first half.
