Stram scores twice to push BSU past U-Mary in overtime, 2-1

BISMARCK, N.D. (MDU Resources Community Bowl) – Sarah Stram (So., F, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) scored twice to lift the Bemidji State University soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory at University of Mary Saturday at MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck, N.D.

A goal by U-Mary’s Michelle, McGeary in the 32nd minute put the Beavers in a 1-0 hole after the first half of play, but the second half belonged to BSU. Stram’s first goal knotted the score at 1-1 with just 28 minutes to play and earned the Beavers a chance for at least a point in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings, forcing the team’s second overtime contest of the season.

Nearly nine minutes into extra time, BSU was granted a corner kick. After junior defender Abigail Nyquist’s (Golden Valley, Minn.) boot the Marauders were whistled for a pair of simultaneous yellow cards and the Beavers were awarded a penalty kick. Stram, who recorded all three of BSU’s shots on goal in the match, buried the kick for her team-leading fourth goal of the season and gave the Beavers the NSIC victory.

Stram has now scored four goals in the Beavers’ last three games and has accounted for two of the Bemidji State’s three game-wining goals.

U-Mary held a 12-10 advantage in total shots, witch included a 6-2 edge in the first 45 minutes alone

Senior goalkeeper Sonja Barr (Duluth, Minn.) stopped all four of five U-Mary shots on goal to gain her second victory of the season and improve to 2-1-1 the season.

The Beavers (3-2; 2-0 NSIC) continue their eight-match string of road games to open the season traveling to Minot, N.D. tomorrow for an afternoon (1 p.m.) match at Minot State University.
