No. 2 Mavericks defeat Beavers, 4-1

MANKATO, Minn. (The Pitch) -- Raquel Thelen (M, Fr., Andover, Minn.) scored her second goal of the season for Bemidji State University, but nationally-ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato out shot the Beavers 16-4 en route to a 4-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory Friday in Mankato, Minn.

Bemidji State goaltender, Sonja Barr (Sr., Duluth, Minn.), matched a career-high 12 saves in the match, but allowed all four MSU goals and ultimately took the loss.  She falls to 2-3-0 in 2014.

Despite out shooting the Beavers 14-2 in the first half with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal, it took the No. 2 Mavericks 21 minutes to get on the board and Jessica Bowe's tally stood as the only goal of the first half.

Leading 1-0, MSU was quick to add to its lead, getting a goal from Dana Savino in the 49th minute. The Beavers would cut the deficit in half when Thelen found the back of the net in the 51st minute, but Kory Kronforst added two goals late, the first in the 85th and the second in the 88th minute, to stretch MSU lead to three goals, 4-1.

Bemidji State, now 3-4-0 overall and 2-2 in league play looks to correct a two-match losing skid Sunday when the team travels to St. Paul, Minn. to battle Concordia University, St. Paul in a 1 p.m. matinee.
