BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Christine Szurek buried a deflection off the University of Minnesota Duluth goalkeeper in the 96th minute of play to give the Bemidji State University soccer team a 2-1, overtime victory in its 2015 regular-season finale to earn a berth into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.
Minnesota Duluth drew first blood, netting a goal off the foot of Kailey Beatt in the 30th minute of play.
BSU got a break in the 65th minute, when Sarah Stram took a penalty kick, but the Bulldogs' keeper, Jordan Melby, got enough of the shot to send it trickling just wide of the left post.
Trailing 1-0 deep into the second half, Abigail Nyquist scored a corner kick to tie the match, 1-1 with just 3:25 left in regulation.
BSU pressured the Bulldogs from the outset of the overtime period posting two shots on goal during the first five minutes and although Melby was in the mix on the game-winning play, Szurek was in the right place at the right time, netting her fifth goal of the season from the doorstep.
Now 11-6-1 overall and 8-6-1 in NSIC play, the Beavers clinched a spot in the NSIC Tournament. The first round of the tournament will be held on the campus sites of the top four seeds, Nov. 4. BSU will be on the road, but the opponent, location and start time are to be determined.
